Very little real learning, Much better books on thi subject available.
Far too basic, It may be that I am just too familiar to Wagner as a forty year subscriber to the Metropolitan Opera and one who has seen his "Ring" in New York and Germany five times, but this is basically a reprint of Metropolitan Opera talking points recorded during broadcast intermissions in its past Ring Cycle performances/ I would suggest Berger's book.
Succinct series of mini-lectures. Thought-provoking, persuasive and well ...
Succinct series of mini-lectures.
Five Stars
Excellent reading for a fan of The Ring.
Very Useful Introduction to the Ring, Particularly Given The Abscence of Much Else
This is a short survey of the four operas of the Ring, including detailed summaries of the action, as well as some critical commentary on each, and on the total.
This explicates Wagner's complex masterwork well. I am not well-schooled in music so those who are would be even better served.I
I recommend it to those interested in learning more about Wagner's works and it should be teamed with a DVD..
Brief but adds to the experience
I read this after seeing the entire Ring Cycle in Seattle.
Great commentary on the Ring, brief and to the point, yet thorough
I recommend getting this book and also the audio companion to the Ring by Deryck Cooke entitled "An Introduction to Der Ring Des Nibelungen".
The Soul of the Ring Cycle
Father Lee's brief analysis of the Ring Operas rings true.
Love it!
Reading this fills in all the answers to the questions the "Ring" brings to the mind of a conscientious viewer/listener...
I have loved everything Father Lee has written and spoken...
